Pastor Howard A. Johnson
Accepted the Lord on his sixth birthday at Union Baptist Church in Muskogee, OK, under Rev.Cecil Potter.

In 1987, he was licenced and in 1988 ordained by Bethel Baptist Church in Union City, CA under Rev. Georage M. Gaskins, where he served as Youth Pastor prior to moving to Roseburg in 1989. RV'ing, golf, bowling and supporting student activites rank among his favorite pastimes. Howard and his wife, Teri, were married in 1976.
Bethany Baptist Church began in Pastor Howard's home in August of 1989, with a membership of five people. The following two Sundays, the fledgling church met in a meeting room at a local motel.

Bethany Bible Fellowship

The Veteran's Memorial Building was then rented through Ivalene Powers, was the beloved church "mother."

The church has been in its present location, 1129 NE Stephens, since January of 2000, changing the name from Bethany Baptist Church to Bethany Bible Fellowship at the time of the move.

There are five things regarding a church that the pastor lists as very important to him. According to Pastor Howard,

1. "We should not beg for money. we should not beg for people."

He also feels that it is important not to judge a person by the clothes they wear (Bethany has no formal dress code).

a fourth belief he holds dear,

2. "One should not feel guilty about coming to church,"

or, he adds,"feel guilty about not coming to church."

Bethany strives to be a church for the un-churched of Douglas County.

Lastly, and characteristically, Pastor Howard says, if it is in the Bible-believe it. "If it is not in the Bible-Do not put something in the Bible," just, he continues, "to staisfy your ego."
